Dear Colleague,

On a global level, the use of natural products in women’s health care is motivated by completely different reasons.
Menopausal women in Western societies seek safe alternatives to hormonal products which may be associated with an increased risk of developing mammary cancer. For women in developing countries, traditional medicinal products represent the only continually available and affordable source for their health care. This dualism is covered within this special issue of Planta Medica.

As a consequence, application of natural compounds in a different societal context produces completely different needs: For the Western situation new products may be desirable because existing products may not cover the entire spectrum of occurring symptoms, or deliver an insufficient relief of some symptoms.

For developing countries safety of traditional medicinal products scientifically speaking seems to have the highest priority. In either case fast, accelerated and reliable concepts and strategies are necessary for the discovery and characterization of (novel) compounds within the plant material in question.
This issue is addressed by the publication of Michel et al. "New concepts, experimental approaches and dereplication strategies for the discovery of novel phytoestrogens from natural sources". Irrespective of whether a herbal product with hormonal activity has to be regarded as new or as an established product, it needs to exhibit the expected mechanistic and or functional properties relevant to the symptoms in question.
Biological mechanisms with relevance to the management of menopausal symptoms are discussed in the paper by Hajirahimkhan et al. "Botanical Modulation of Menopausal Symptoms: Mechanisms of Action?"

In addition to these topics this issue of Planta Medica summarizes either recent data on specific plants (Vitex agnus-castus, hops (Humulus lupulus) and Cyclopia) or highlights the needs in women’s health care of developing countries. Their plant derived medicinal products for health care represent the only continually available and affordable source for health care products.
In this regard issues of efficacy and safety of these products particularly matters, as is exemplified for the South African perspective by Abdillahi and Van Staden.

We hope this special Planta Medica issue on Women's Health is of interest to you.

Sincerely,
Günter Vollmer
